Sandustry closed-loop Lava transport and solid Cinder logistics

Heat logistics · Lava

Move Lava by turning it into a solid first.

Lava is a liquid without the normal fluid-pipe route. The documented factory solution is a state change: Snow makes Scoria, excavation makes Cinder, and direct fire restores Lava at the destination.

Quick answer

How to build a closed-loop infinite Lava system in Sandustry

Plants do not produce Lava in Sandustry. To solve mid-game lava depletion, construct a closed-loop logistics circuit: solidify Lava with Snow into Scoria, excavate it into Cinder, transport the solid Cinder over Conveyor Belts or Launchers, and re-melt it into liquid Lava with Fire or contained Filter burners. In Update #3, cold Thermal Buffers also convert Lava back to Cinder. Always encase lava channels in Basalt or Foundations to prevent terrain erosion.

The Closed-Loop Lava Cycle (No Plants Required)

When natural subterranean lava chambers deplete in mid-game, engineers often search for botanical production recipes. However, plants do not produce lava in Sandustry. Instead, sustainable factories rely on a closed-loop state cycle: quench liquid Lava with Snow into Scoria, mine Scoria into solid Cinder, route Cinder across Conveyor Belts or Launchers, and re-melt it at the destination with Fire.

In Update #3 (v0.5.6), when a Thermal Buffer operates at cold (negative) temperature, Lava converts directly back into Cinder while releasing less heat instead of being consumed. This provides a controllable solid-state heat reservoir without requiring continuous fluid pumping.

Update #3 Terrain Erosion & Basalt Liners

Official Update #3 introduces dynamic erosion: Lava actively dissolves and destroys Fluxite, Redsoil, and Strataform terrain blocks upon physical contact. Never let uncontained lava touch natural cavern walls.

Mandatory Containment Rule: Line all lava extraction shafts, conduits, and catch basins with inert Basalt blocks or manufactured Foundations. Basalt walls completely resist lava erosion and prevent sudden structural collapses into lower factory tiers.

Phase / ElementIn-Game State / MechanismEngineering Rule
Liquid LavaDensity 200 (Update #3)Floats lighter solids (e.g. Stratacore density ~130); dissolves Fluxite/Redsoil/Strataform.
Solid ScoriaLava + Snow reactionSolidified intermediate created instantly upon contact with Cryoblaster Snow.
Solid CinderExcavated from ScoriaMoves freely via Conveyor Belts, Grabbers, and Launchers without fluid pipes.
Thermal BufferConverts Lava at negative tempAdds less heat and yields solid Cinder instead of consuming lava.
Advanced Filter WallNo fluid leakage (Update #4)Safely gates liquid lava pools without perimeter leaks.

03

Update #4 Advanced Filter Wall Fluid Sealing

Under Update #4 (v0.5.7), Lava can no longer leak through Advanced Filter Walls. This resolves legacy containment failures, allowing engineers to stage molten lava reservoirs behind filter barriers for selective material interaction without fluid breach.

Questions answered

Solve the next
blockage.

Can I move Lava through Pipes in Sandustry?

The official Lava route is not a Pipe route. Convert Lava to Cinder, move the solid on Grabbers, Conveyor Belts, or Launchers, then ignite it where the Lava is needed.

Does Water destroy Lava?

No. The official Wiki states that Water turns to Steam when it lands on Lava and that the Lava quantity does not decrease.

How do I make an automatic Lava burner?

Configure a Filter to allow Cinder, place a solid block directly below it, fill it with Cinder, and ignite the Cinder. The trapped Lava can ignite compatible pixels moving across it.

Can plants produce Lava in Sandustry?

No. Plants do not produce Lava in Sandustry. To solve mid-game lava depletion, build a closed loop: solidify Lava with Snow into Scoria, excavate it into Cinder for belt transport, and re-melt Cinder into Lava at your factory using Fire or a contained Filter burner.

Why does Lava destroy my factory terrain in Update #3?

Update #3 introduces terrain erosion physics where Lava dissolves Fluxite, Redsoil, and Strataform on contact. Always line lava channels, pools, and drop chutes with Basalt or manufactured Foundations.

  • Lava is found in deep Lava Caves and can be recreated by applying Fire to Cinder.
  • Snow freezes Lava into Scoria; breaking Scoria produces Cinder, which can move through solid logistics.
  • A Filter with a solid block below can hold ignited Cinder as Lava, letting it ignite passing pixels.
  • Update #3 Official: Lava density is 200. Lava actively melts and destroys Fluxite, Redsoil, and Strataform terrain blocks on contact; line conduits with Basalt or Foundations to contain it.
  • Update #3 Official: When a Thermal Buffer is cold (negative temperature), Lava will add less heat and convert back to Cinder instead of being fully consumed.
  • Update #4 Official: Lava can no longer leak through Advanced Filter Walls.
