Personal Sandustry Water trunk with a working Pump Pipe and Liquid Vent route

Fluid logistics · Water

Move Water with Pumps, Pipes, Vents & Cryogun Snow Melting.

Water is the fluid that belongs in a pipe network. Build the route as a closed Pump to Pipe to Liquid Vent system, and keep Lava out because the official Pipe entry explicitly excludes it. For early maps lacking surface lakes, melt Cryogun snow in a heating box.

Quick answer

How to route Water in Update #4

Place a Pump in the water source and connect a continuous Pipe directly to a Liquid Vent. In Update #4 (v0.5.7) pipes no longer automatically connect to other adjacent pipes, so to extend a network you must start or end on an existing pipe tile. Building over a crossing pipe line now creates a Pipe Bridge. Keep each fluid in its own network.

Update #4 Pipe Overhaul: Connections & Pipe Bridges

Official Update #4 (v0.5.7) overhauls fluid logistics: Pipes no longer automatically connect to other adjacent pipes when built. To extend a network, you must start or end your placement directly on an existing pipe tile.

Building over a crossing pipe line now automatically creates a Pipe Bridge, allowing intersecting fluid lines to cross cleanly without mixing. You can also select, move, copy, paste, and undo pipes in Pipes Mode, or hold Alt+C to select both structures and pipes for unified blueprints.

02

Build one visible trunk

Start with a source Pump, run one continuous Pipe trunk, and finish at a Liquid Vent where water is actually needed. The official Pipe route confirms the Pump-to-Vent model; the image below is the personal setup used to make each endpoint easy to inspect.

03

Diagnose dry output from both ends

When a destination stays dry, begin at the source rather than replacing random blocks. Confirm water exists, Pump contact is real, the Pipe is continuous, and the Vent is attached to the intended delivery point.

04

Separate transport from supply

A destination that briefly fills and then drains is different from a route that never delivers. In my save, the first state meant the transport path worked but consumers exceeded supply; the second meant source contact, continuity, or Vent placement needed attention.

05

Keep fluid networks separate

The official Pipe documentation warns that mixed liquid inputs distribute across outputs. Give Water its own network when you want predictable delivery, and keep later fluids out of that trunk.

06

Treat Lava as the exception

Lava is not a Pipe fluid. Keep it out of this design and use the documented state-change route to Scoria and Cinder when it has to move through the factory.

How do Pipes work in Sandustry?

A continuous Pipe connects a Pump to a Liquid Vent. The Pump picks up liquid and the Vent deposits it.

Why is my Pipe not moving Water?

Check that the Pump and Vent are connected by a continuous Pipe and that the Pump is actually inside the source liquid.

How do I get water early game if there is no nearby lake?

The best early-game technique when far from a surface aquifer is the Cryogun Snow Melting method: construct a closed 3x3 collection box, spray Snow using your Cryoblaster, and place a heat source (or direct Flame) to instantly melt the snow into pure Water.

What are the 4 ways to source water in Sandustry?

1. Natural Surface Aquifers (Pumps in lakes/pools); 2. Cryogun Snow Box (Spraying snow and melting into water); 3. Steam Condensation (Routing steam through a Condenser or ceiling rain catch); 4. Subterranean Aquifers (Drilling down to subterranean water layers).

Can Pipes move Lava?

No. Lava is the documented exception; convert and transport it as Cinder instead.

Source Wiki

  • Pipes connect Pumps to Liquid Vents and transfer liquids through a continuous network.
  • Pipes are non-solid and only interact with Pumps and Liquid Vents.
  • The official Pipe article excludes Lava from pipe transport and warns that mixed liquids distribute across outputs.

Community-tested

  • In my v0.4.12 Vanilla save, R switched the Pump and Vent placement workflow away from single placement for faster repeated construction. Treat this as a recorded control, not a permanent cross-version shortcut.
