Sandustry Lava Mechanics Guide: Disappearance Rules, Thermal Buffer Loops & v0.5.6 Changes

One of the most persistent questions in Sandustry is whether Lava is a permanent infinite fluid or if it eventually depletes. The short answer: natural world Lava does not dissipate on its own, but specific machines (like Thermal Buffers in sub-zero states) actively consume Lava pixels and convert them into Cinder. Update #3 (v0.5.6) fundamentally overhauled these interactions—eliminating unintended Lava loss in ancient artifact rooms and introducing sub-zero Cinder solidifying.

Fluid State
Liquid (Density 75)
Natural Disappearance
Never (Unless consumed by machines or reaction)
Thermal Buffer v0.5.6
Cold state converts Lava into Cinder without total loss
Artifact Rooms Fix
Thermal Buffers no longer consume ancient room Lava

Quick answer

Does Lava disappear in Sandustry?

No, free-flowing or pooled Lava never naturally evaporates or disappears over time. If your Lava disappears, one of three events occurred: 1) Water contacted Lava, transforming the top layer into Steam; 2) Snow or cryogenic cooling converted it into Scoria; or 3) An active Thermal Buffer drew Lava as heat input. In v0.5.6, running a Thermal Buffer at negative temperatures safely solidifies Lava into transportable Cinder rather than deleting it.

What the evidence supports

Master Lava thermodynamics,
prevent unexpected fluid loss.

  1. 01 · Distinguish Static Pools from Dynamic Sinks

Natural Lava pools in deep caverns contain a finite number of liquid pixels. Because Pipes cannot transport Lava, every bucket or displacement reduces pool volume unless you generate renewable Cinder upstream.

  2. 02 · Understand Thermal Buffer Heat Consumption

When connected to high-voltage lines, a hot Thermal Buffer absorbs Lava heat. Prior to v0.5.6, this occasionally consumed the fluid entirely without trace. Update #3 changes this: cold-state Thermal Buffers now turn passing Lava into solid Cinder pellets.

  3. 03 · Protect Terrain from Dynamic Erosion

Since v0.5.6, uncontained Lava rapidly melts Fluxite, Redsoil, and Strataform blocks on contact. If your Lava level dropped, check if it burned through the floor and drained into a subterranean cavity.

  4. 04 · Isolate Artifact Room Heaters

Update #3 patched ancient ruins: Thermal Buffers discovered in Artifact Rooms no longer drain their native Lava fuel supply, preserving ancient puzzle chambers indefinitely.

  5. 05 · Build a Closed Cinder-Lava Regeneration Loop

To achieve true infinite Lava without draining cavern reserves: freeze renewable Lava with Cryoblaster Snow into Scoria, break Scoria into Cinder, convey Cinder to your furnace, and reignite with Flamethrower or burner belts.

Questions answered

Solve the next
blockage.

Why did my Lava pool disappear?

Lava does not disappear on its own. Common causes are: 1) It melted through Fluxite/Redsoil terrain and drained downward; 2) Water or moisture leaked in, converting it to Steam; 3) A nearby Thermal Buffer drew it in for thermal exchange.

Is Lava renewable in Sandustry?

Yes. By mining renewable Earth-Stratocore or cycling Cinder through enclosed combustion chambers, you can generate continuous Lava indefinitely without depleting natural lakes.

What changed with Lava in Update #3 (v0.5.6)?

Lava now actively destroys Fluxite, Redsoil, and Strataform terrain. Additionally, sub-zero Thermal Buffers now solidify Lava into Cinder instead of deleting it, and Artifact Room buffers no longer burn away.

Can I pipe Lava directly into a generator?

No. Pipes do not support Lava. You must either transfer radiant heat directly through walls or freeze Lava into Cinder for conveyor transport.

  • Lava is naturally situated in deep cavern biomes and has a liquid density of 75.
  • The official Pipe catalogue explicitly excludes Lava from pipe networks; physical state transformation is required.
  • Update #3 (v0.5.6) Patch Notes: 'Thermal Buffer in cold state adds less heat and converts Lava to Cinder rather than fully consuming it. Artifact rooms Thermal Buffer no longer consumes Lava.'
