What the Wiki
currently says.
Burnt Residue is created by igniting Residue. This can be done manually with a Flamethrower or the napalm upgrade of the Rocket Launcher. It can be automated with a Pyro Dispenser, or by running Residue over Lava trapped in Filters.
A Residue only has a 25% chance of turning into Burnt Residue and may instead just burn and be destroyed with no output.
Burnt Residue can be dropped through a Kinetic Press to produce Gold and Seeds. It must be dropped from a height of at least 25 blocks to pass through the press and produce its outputs which will fall out of the bottom. 1 Burnt Residue will always output 1 Gold and 1 Seed.
With enough Residue input, a pile ignited by the player can burn continuously to keep producing Burnt Residue without having to keep reigniting.
