Dirt is a diggable resource, and makes up a large amount of the ground.
Dirt is a relatively soft resource; it can be quickly dug by shovel, and bigger tools will extract Sand from it at even faster rates.
You will often find yourself excavating Dirt as much to get through it, as for the Sand it yields.
